Sorry I’ve been missing in action for quite some time. The day job gets in the way — or at least has for most of this year. But hope to be back up blogging on books and shows here shortly.
Looking forward to the “Outlander” series on Starz kicking off on Aug. 9. If you haven’t had a chance to visit their Facebook page, you should check it out. Let me know what you think.
Here’s the latest trailer!

It’s been a long time coming but production has finally started on Diana Gabaldon’s OUTLANDER, which is currently filming in Scotland. The 16-part series will run on STARZ next spring. Here’s a look at the cast so far:
Jamie Fraser: Scottish actor Sam Heughan. He’s not been in anything major here in the US but has had lots of roles across the pond in British TV/theater. Here’s what Gabaldon said when she saw his audition tape:
He looks totally different than he did in any of the stills and five seconds later, Sam Heughan’s GONE, and so am I. It’s Jamie Fraser, right there in front of me, moving, talking. One of the biggest thrills ever.
And that’s what actors do. Good ones. They can “be” someone else, totally.
Claire Randall: Caitriona Balfe, an Irish supermodel turned actress. Unless you keep up with the fashion world — she’s been on the runway and many fashion magazine covers — we haven’t really seen her in anything here in the US, although she does appear in THE ESCAPE PLAN with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger that’s in theaters now.
Frank Randall/Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall: Tobias Menzies. Fans of GAME OF THRONES know him as Edmure Tully. Jane Austen fans might know him from the 2007 British TV remake of PERSUASION, where he played Mr. Elliot.
- Dougal MacKenzie: Graham McTavish. Seasoned actor of film/theater. He appeared opposite Sylvester Stallone in 2008’s RAMBO. And he plays Dwalin in the HOBBIT movie series.
- Colum MacKenzie: Gary Lewis, who played the coal miner dad in BILLY ELLIOT.
- Geillis Duncan: Lotte Verbeek, who you’ve seen her as Giulia Farnese (mistress to Pope Alexander VI) on Showtime’s THE BORGIAS.
- Laoghaire MacKenzie: Nell Hudson. OUTLANDER is her first major acting gig.
- Jenny Fraser Murray: Laura Donnelly will play Jamie’s sister. Donnelly appeared on the short-lived Ashley Judd TV series MISSING in 2012.
To keep track of the series, follow Outlander_Starz on Twitter. The show also has an Instagram account under Outlander_Starz. And check out the Facebook page, which is titled OUTLANDER.
Is this art a little too graphic for Outlander graphic novel? September 11, 2010Posted by Diana McCabe in Fun stuff.

Apparently some of the artwork in Diana Gabaldon’s graphic novel THE EXILE, which is a retelling of the OUTLANDER story, was a little too graphic for some of the editors. I’m not gonna post it here but you can take a look at it by visiting Diana Gabaldon’s blog if you CLICK HERE. She explains it all. Suffice to say, the artwork is of Jamie and Claire’s wedding night. I plan to buy the graphic novel. Hope I can download it onto my iPad.

OUTLANDER author Diana Gabaldon — who is recuperating after knee surgery — shares this snippet of a song from Mike Gibb, a lyricist and playwright who is a huge OUTLANDER fan. He and his friend, Kevin Walsh, want to do a musical telling of the Jamie and Claire story. On her blog, Diana says “There’s a possibility that this song-cycle might eventually be the bones of a stage production, but for now, it’s just songs.” She notes that the copyright to the song is hers and it’s OK to download and share the song for free. CLICK HERE to play it. Or, go to her blog HERE to play it and leave her a comment! (I’ve also downloaded it below so hopefully one of these links will work!) What do you think?!
The song is called “Blood of my Blood.” Diana says she likes it.
Will the musical come before a movie? Diana says she’s extended the option agreement with Essential Entertainment, including a new clause allowing them to explore the possibility of making a mini-series, in addition to or instead of a feature film.
Meanwhile, Gibb says that he’ll launch “Outlander the Musical” in Aberdeen on July 31. He’ll showcase eight songs from the score: “Falling,” “I Am Ready,” “Could I Surrender My Heart?,” “Is Tu Fuil ‘o Mo Chuislean,” “Such A Fool,” “Farewell,” “Safe,”and “The Right Road.” The songs will be performed by Scottish actor/singers Allan Scott-Douglas (a 6’2” red headed Scot!) and Sue Robertson.
A CD of 14 songs from the score will be released on that same day. For more info on the CD, email him at firstname.lastname@example.org. The CD is available mail order starting Aug. 1, but you can pre-order. (US $15 plus $4 postage).
What’s your favorite ‘movie’ video of Diana Gabaldon’s ‘Outlander’? November 30, 2009Posted by Diana McCabe in Entertainment.

Everyone keeps asking when Diana Gabaldon’s OUTLANDER will come to the big screen. I’ll repeat a post I did a few months ago: So far there is no word on a movie because of the economy. Options have been renewed but that’s it. (Read my original post HERE. At the bottom of the post is some info I quoted from Diana’s blog.) Still, a few folks have asked about the YouTube videos they are seeing that look like movie trailers. They aren’t! Fans have put together several different ones that show who they think should be cast if there ever is a movie. So here’s a clip to get things rolling. Just search for “Outlander” on YouTube and you’ll see all of the various videos. Which one do you like best? This one has Olivia Williams playing Claire and Gerard Butler playing Jamie.
