Mac & Barrons on film: Dreamworks options KMM’s Darkfever series August 21, 2011

Original Darkfever cover.

So start making your casting pitches. Dreamworks just optioned film rights to all of Karen Marie Moning’s DARKFEVER series. Here’s a bit from the article in “Variety” magazine: (It’s not a long article so CLICK HERE to read the whole thing. And yes — the author got details wrong on the release of the last novel in the series, but only her fans will notice that. Details, details, details.)

With “Harry Potter” finished, “The Twilight Saga” coming to a close and “The Hunger Games” getting steady buzz, DreamWorks is looking to launch its own fantasy franchise, as the studio has acquired feature film rights to all five books in Karen Marie Moning’s bestselling “Darkfever” series.

And here is what KMM said on her Facebook page:
Thanks for your congrats on the Dreamworks announcement in Variety Magazine! More to come when I know more 🙂

So — a few caveats. An option doesn’t mean a film will be made, but it’s a first step. Lots of authors get options. Think about Diana Gabaldon and OUTLANDER. (She said on Twitter the other day when I asked if there was any new movie news: “Well, no news I’m allowed to share, let’s put it that way. <g>”

We also don’t know if KMM will be involved all that much in any film. Some authors are included — like George R.R. Martin in HBO’s GAME OF THRONES. Others, like Charlaine Harris, are consulted for TRUE BLOOD, but Alan Ball has veered significantly from the book series. Other writers, such as WICKED LOVELY’s Melissa Marr, want nothing to do with the film version of her series. Go figure.

I also have read that some fans are worried that anything on film won’t be as good as the books. True. There is that risk. I love the Sookie Stackhouse books but also am really digging the HBO series. Others are worried that Dreamworks has lumped KMM’s works into the more teeny bopper YA genre by mentioning it in the same breath as TWILIGHT. Does that mean anything they might do won’t be as intense as what’s in the novels? (Boy — that would piss off JZB!) I definitely don’t think it’s a YA teen book.  But let’s see what happens. How far it goes. And hey folks — it’s just a movie. We still have the real JZB and Mac and V’lane in our heads ….

But for your casting pleasure, I’ve included a video to kick off the casting questions. (I think the woman who plays Mac in this is right. And even the guy for V’lane. But Barrons? I think this is her pick — Eric Etebari — but not quite who I see as JZB. Casting thoughts?

1. Diana McCabe - August 21, 2011

OK — I think the girl is right for Mac. And the Sex in the City guy could be V’lane, but still not sure about JZB. So let’s hear it, send me videos and ideas for Darkfever cast!

Happy dreaming!

Katherine Petersdorf - June 3, 2012

I’d love to see Oded Fahr as JZB, love your choice in V’Lane Jason is so cute. I think maybe Ian Somerholder as Christian. Who is that girl who plays Mac she is so pretty.

2. Lissa - August 21, 2011

How about Joe Manganiello from True Blood as JZB?

Diana McCabe - August 21, 2011

I think they’d have to toughen him up a little. I love him as Alcide. And he’s got the build. He just needs the attitude …. I guess because I see him as a sweet-hearted were on the series, I need to see him all cleaned up to see if he could be a JZB. (What does he look like without the beard?)

Anyone else?

3. Krissy Phillips - August 22, 2011

Oh I am 100% on board with Joe Manganiello. I have said this before and he is very hot without the beard as well. He is built and he can be dark. Eric Etebari is not hot enough IMO. Also, the girl in vid is a great choice, I can’t remember the actress’s name, but I also like Maggie Grace for Mac and Jason Lewis, hot damn, for V’lane. He’s perfect. If there was ever a movie made from the Black Dagger Brotherhood books, I would love Jason Lewis to play Rhage.

Anyway, I can’t wait for a movie based on the Fever Series.

4. Tina - August 23, 2011

What is funny is as soon as I heard this news, I also immediately thought of Joe Manganiello for JZB. Maybe we need to start a grassroots campain…

5. Marie - August 23, 2011

I don’t know, Joe Manganiello as JZB doesn’t work for me.

A few days ago, I saw this:

. . . and since then David Boreanaz is my Barrons (please check this pic out!!)

I also like this trailer best, so far . . . :

6. tillyslaton - August 24, 2011

Totally rockin’ awesome .. WOW!

7. Amanda - August 25, 2011

Aidan Turner would make a great JZB

8. Barrons's babe - September 15, 2011

Omg! Joe M. would be great as jzb. But I think Kristen Bell could be Alina, not Mac. I think Mac should be Amber Heard. A new actress. Matt Bomer as the dreamy-eyed guy… He is so cute. Lol that’s all I have for now. What do you think?

Diana McCabe - September 15, 2011

I think Matt Bomer would be cool as dreamy-eyed guy. I still think Kristen Bell as Mac over Amber Heard — maybe both look too “worldly” for early Mac? Dunno!!!! I’ll have to look for more possibles this weekend! Thanks for dropping by the blog!

Barrons's babe - September 17, 2011

How about Hilary duff!

9. Barrons's babe - September 15, 2011

Chace Crawford as Christian. And either dakota fanning or Saorise Ronan as dani.

Diana McCabe - September 16, 2011

Well — I think Chace looks too young to be Christian!!!! (But I’m prolly a lot older than you so maybe it’s just me!) I think Saorise Ronan is an excellent choice as Dani!

Barrons's babe - September 17, 2011

I know when they described Dani I thought of her. Lol maybe chace does look too young. But he is solo cute. Lol

10. Barrons's babe - September 15, 2011

Cillian Murphy one of the unseelie prince…

Diana McCabe - September 16, 2011

Ohhhhh — he would make a creepy good Unseelie Prince!

Barrons's babe - September 17, 2011

Yeah but he is kinda short. Lol but he has a good creepy but still cute kinda guy.

11. IheartChristianMacKeltar - September 16, 2011

Jason Momoa for JZB all the way!!!!

Barrons's babe - September 17, 2011

He is cute! How tall is he?

IheartChristianMacKeltar - September 19, 2011

Jason Momoa is 6’5 😉 I fell in love with him as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones… YUMMY! He made horse loving barbarians very hot!

12. krissy Phillips - September 18, 2011

I had suggested Joe Mangiello earlier and still love him, but I just saw Warrior and now I am thinking Tom Hardy. He is gorgeous, is very muscular and has tattoos all over him. He is HOT!! Trust me girls, you got to check this guy out. Yummy!!!!

Oh and he has the sexiest mouth I have ever seen.

kristeng - October 11, 2011

I think Tom Hardy would make a great Ryodan next to Joe Mangiello as Barrons!

13. Verena - December 25, 2011

The girl does not really fit. She is to normal for beeing Mac.
And when the character of Mac is going to change, she will not fit a bit to the new one anymore.

14. erin - July 28, 2012

Brittany Snow for Mac…she looks great blonde and brunette and is a great actress, and the right age.

Ian somerhalder (sp?) For Christian. Matt Bomer for DEG. Chris Hemsworth as Vlane. Dakota Fanning for Dani. Gerard Butler for JZB. 🙂

15. tb - December 4, 2012

Alcide from TB for Barrons

mumbles13 - February 12, 2013

Oh my goodness! Such good suggestions! Saorise Ronan would be a great Dani but she might be too old looking now. Let’s just address the fact that Matt Bomer is gorgeoso! I say yes for DEG if he’s cast at all. Joe M. or Jason M. for Barrons. Barrons has to have dark rustic skin and these guys make the cut. V’lane I picture super fit but not thick like Joe or Jason; he’d have to be a leaner kind of fitness. I have no suggestions for him yet. And yes, all the girls seem too ‘worldy’ to properly play Mac. We need someone who can go from sunshine to sadistic in both appearance and acting.Amber, Scarlett J (too old too!), Brittany snow, etc don’t measure up.

Amsk - February 16, 2013

I was thinking Brittany Snow as Mac for a while, but then I saw pics of Amber Heard with dark hair and I think she’d fit the bill. Joe Manganiello is my JZB – simply put. I think Michelle Monaghan would make a great Alina, especially if Amber Heard was Mac. Manu Bennett would be great as Ryodan or one of the other men. I’d love Jessica Lange as Rainey, but she may be a tad older than who they would want to cast although I don’t remember her exact age ever being discussed in the books. Other people have said Diane Lane, which I wouldn’t have a problem with although I think I’d opt for Ashley Judd personally.

16. Marlo - March 18, 2013

Just hurry up and make it .can’t wait any longer

Felicia - March 20, 2013

I can’t wait for the movie! I see Gerard Butler as Barrons (loved him dark in Phantom), Bradley Cooper as Vlane(blond hair with his eyes), and Jason Staham as Ryodan(remember the scene with him and the girl over the car in his movie where they had to stay in fast mode so could be him and Jo).

17. Breanna - October 23, 2013

They should hold auditions. I would make a killer Mac. 😉
